I am not ashamed to admit, Jan Bulis has been one of our best players this series. That being said, I have no idea why this is happening or how, or why it didn't happen earlier.

Am I hallucinating, or did he not request a trade in January or so? Was that just a media rumor? Seems to be an amazing transition from being the stupidest player on the ice to being a 'smart hockey player' (thanks Garry Valk, you tool), contributing in droves to our playoff hopes. At this time, we would be foolhearty to not try and bring him back for next year, if the price is around $1mil. Is he benefitting from Linden's playoff drive? What gives?

He probably thinks this is a great opportunity to showcase for his UFA status ... and it is. He's making a good case for himself.

This group has really come together as a cohesive team of late. We had a shaky finish to the regular season, but when shit was on the line in San Jose, we pulled together and clinched the division.

Bulis has been a big part of it.

For probably 90% of the season we complained about his inability to play within the team system. We bitched about stupid plays and selfish puck control. However he seemed to finally buy into the system around the end of March.

Maybe he finally realized that playoff failures in Montreal were the result of a few too many I's in TEAM. He also probably watched some game footage and realized that he was the only regular player that consitently failed to play a team game.

I don't care, I'm just glad he came around when he did.....that being said, I don't know if I want him back for more that $1.3M a year.

Well Bulis is a guy with some talent. He certainly hasn't stayed in the NHL due to his work ethic or consistency.

I love the way he's playing right now! Bulis is sure as hell showcasing his stuff for his next paycheck! I thought there was a report rescently saying he wanted to stay in Vancouver if offered a resonable contract....hmmm. I'm sure that was just a media ploy though as he would use an offer from Vancouver to get more elsewhere. If he wanted to stay I wouldn't sign him for more then 1 million$ per year.

Though Bulis has been playing somewhat well in the playoffs, I still wouldn't want him back next year.
His inconsistent performance and consistent undisciplined play are just not worth it

I dont want a player that only shows up during the playoffs. If we needed someone like that we would sign Forsberg.

What happened to Jan Bulis?

That's really an epistimological question.

If Jan Bulis plays well since January but I don't notice until April, does it make a sound?

The problem with Jan Bulis was everyone, including him, thought he was a potential 30 goal scorer. He had no chemistry with the twins, could not play with Naslund and looked lost with Smolinski.

He was brought in to score goals and provide secondary scoring which he could not do. He has played on the PK all year and has been a key part of our PK success. He has played relatively sound defensive hockey throughout the season. But.....he was not brought in for his defense so he was a disappointment.

But come playoff time we place a higher value on team defense and so he gets noticed. He looks good with B'Mo and Hansen because all three have blazing speed but the line has not been scoring goals at a blazing pace. What we see is again potential. Perhaps a place for him on a potentially offensive line. But if we get past Dallas and go into the next series with still no goals we will once again be complaining that he can't score.

He is a sound defensive player with skills that have yet to translate into goal scoring threat on a regular basis. If he ever develops that part of his game then he is worth the 1 million plus. Unless and until then he is a good role player but how many of those can one team afford at over 1 million each??

The bottom line is that we all had high offensive expectations that he would replace Carter. When that did not happen we picked apart his game and complained about his salary. In a tight defensive series he is valuable but how will he do in a hard hitting or wide open series???

bulis never asked for a trade, that was media exageration.

what bulis did say was that if he did not get better playing time he would consider requesting a trade because obviously he was not helping the team or himself with the playing time he was getting

completely different things

Good points HW. I think we will find ourselves in a similar position this summer but with a different player. Bulis will be gone. Nonis has assembled his key pieces for this team he is placing affordable accessories around them and hoping assuming they perform to a certain level. Bulis is a perfect example of this, Pyatt too.

So what happens next year? Salo jsut ate up 2 mill more of cap space and we have to resign or fill quite a few spots. Does Hansen make it up if he has a strong camp? Rypien? this is where the development system has to step up. I'd rather replace Bulis with a cheaper prospect from our stable than give him a raise. I see more upside in others that Bulis being a PK defensive specialist.
